The Ports Regulator of South Africa (“the Regulator”) formally notifies all stakeholders, including but not limited to the regulated entity (National Ports Authority), and other users of the South African port system, regarding the matter detailed below. This Notice is issued in the interest of transparency.
Wage negotiations began in February 2026 between the Ports Regulator and SATAWU. Despite multiple rounds of discussions between the involved parties, and the intervention of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (“the CCMA”) by way of conciliation, the parties have not been able to reach agreement. The Ports Regulator awaits the CCMA to issue a certificate of outcome indicating that the dispute remains unresolved. The Ports Regulator has noted certain social media statements indicating an intention to embark on strike action, however, the Ports Regulator, has not received any formal notice of a strike.
In the event that SATAWU Members decide to embark on a strike, the Ports Regulator will apply appropriate mitigating measures to ensure minimum disruptions to operations and to stakeholders.
The Regulator will continue to monitor developments arising from the dispute and remains open to meaningful engagements with SATAWU, with a view to encouraging the expeditious resolution thereof. We will update stakeholders in the event of the strike being formally advised.
