Subject: OPERATIONAL PRESSURE BEING EXPERIENCED IN THE PORTS OF DURBAN AND RICHARDS BAY.
Dear Members and Port related authorities.
SAASOA wishes to draw all parties ‘ attention to the significant operational pressures and weather patterns currently being experienced in the ports of Durban and Richards Bay.
As of today, there are reported to be a significant number of vessels at the outer anchorage of Durban and Richards Bay with more vessels arriving daily, reflecting a combination of factors affecting port fluidity and vessel turnaround times. The resulting congestion is creating substantial operational challenges for all stakeholders, including shipping lines, agents, terminal operators, cargo owners, transport providers ,marine service providers, and other related port officials.
In periods such as these, where port capacity is under considerable strain, it is imperative that all users of the port system and officials make every effort to avoid any actions that could inadvertently exacerbate the situation. SAASOA therefore respectfully requests all members , to ensure strict compliance with all applicable port, marine, terminal and berthing rules, procedures, and regulations.
In particular, members are encouraged to:
- Ensure that vessel arrival information and ETA updates and purpose of the vessels call are accurate and submitted timeously.
- Adhere strictly to berth planning, vessel scheduling, and operational protocols.
- Avoid unnecessary requests, deviations or operational changes that may impact berth allocation or vessel sequencing.
- Ensure that all documentation and cargo-related requirements are completed promptly and accurately.
- Cooperate fully with TNPA, terminal operators and marine service providers in support of efficient vessel movements; and
- Take all reasonable steps within their control to minimise delays and promote port fluidity.
While many of the factors contributing to the current congestion may be beyond the control of individual port users, collective adherence to established procedures and operational disciplines can make a meaningful contribution toward alleviating pressure on the system.
SAASOA appreciates the cooperation and support of all members and port authority officials during this challenging period and trusts that, through a coordinated and disciplined approach, the ports can return to a more normal operating environment as soon as possible.
